CHESHAM, UK -- Data center energy costs are skyrocketing for United Kingdom retailers, who on average waste more than $2 million (£1.25 million) a year in excess energy consumption.
A study conducted by RichardsoNEyres, a data center infrastructure company, found that most of the U.K.’s top 100 retailers plan to prioritize waste expense and energy prices in the next year.
About 60 percent of respondents said they plan to improve data center capacity. Capacity, in many cases, has failed to grow in line with online sales and new stores. Aging retail data center infrastructure also can sap the time of IT staff by a quarter.
"Spiraling energy costs and the need to demonstrate good corporate social responsibility means that retailers need their IT infrastructure to catch-up with the best practice demonstrated elsewhere in British industry,” said Adam Kemp, director of RichardsoNEyres.
The study also found that many retailers haven’t implemented a disaster recovery and continuity plan as mandated under the recent British Standard BS 25999-2.
