The Four Ms for Improving Energy Efficiency in Data Centers

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- AFCO Systems recently released a white paper to help datacenter managers get the most out of last year’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report focusing on IT energy use, which is predicted to escalate rapidly if no action is taken.

"The EPA's report points out the dramatic effect the growing usage of data centers will have on U.S. energy consumption if left unchecked," said AFCO CEO Michael Mallia. "Through our analysis and recommendations, we hope to help customers make their datacenters more energy efficient."

As part of a new white paper, "Deciphering the EPA Report on Data Center Energy Efficieny," AFCO created four tenets to give data center managers a starting point for tackling power efficiency challenges.

The "Four Ms for Data Center Energy Efficiency" are:

  1. Measure: Some cooling in many datacenters is actually wasted, and it is essential for datacenter managers to understand relationships and interaction between various cooling components in order to assume maximum control. AFCO advises companies to measure the supply, server inlet and return, ambient room temperatures and airflow.
  2. Manage: Managing airflow can be a key factor in improving datacenter efficiency, according to the EPA report. AFCO recommends plugging the leaks, such as filling in missing tiles or holes that no longer serve any purpose. Controlling airflow to the computer inlet is important. Certain types of equipment can be used to manage airflow at various points, such as a high-efficiency chilled water pump to enhance cabinet level airflow.
  3. Monritor: Cabinet level monitoring is vital, and serves as a defense against “downing” events.
  4. Maintain: Executing best practices is necessry to maintain datacenter operations amidst technology turnover. Tweak airhandler systems as significant configurations occur and use trend analyses to factor in legacy infrastructure obsolescence.
