Miercom Launches Green Certification Program for Networking Gear

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Network product test center Miercom has launched a green certification program for networking equipment that reduces energy consumption, e-waste and fulfills strict environmental directives.

Miercom’s Certified Green program rates networking equipment based on several criteria, such as power efficiency, heat dissipation, cooling requirements, energy efficiency and overall product efficiency. It also aims to challenge suppliers to design and deploy equipment that promote green IT.

The certification is powered by Ixia, which can emulate real-world data center applications and test several application profiles to determine benchmarks related to performance and power.

Cisco Catalyst 3750-E, 3560-E, 3750, 3560 and 2960 Series switches are the first products to earn the certification. Testing of the switches found they drew power efficiently under real-world conditions and high-efficiency power supply operation with smart power management capabilities.

“Miercom recognizes technologies such as virtualization, energy standby features and functionality consolidation as being equally important in a product's environmental impact as the power it consumes -- a measurement that seemingly preoccupies other vendors and labs with greenwash attempts," said Miercom CEO Rob Smithers.
