Samsung, Toshiba Take Top Spot in Greenpeace Survey; Nintendo Lags Behind

AMSTERDAM -- The seventh version of Greenpeace's "Guide to Greener Electronics" shows that it's anyone's game at this point. Previous iterations of the report, which ranks companies based on use of toxic chemicals and e-waste takeback programs, have had Nokia switching from leading the pack to lagging behind within the span of 3 months, and Apple dropped from 11th place to 14th, then up to 10th, all in the course of one year.

This year's report finds Samsung, Toshiba and Nokia in the top three spots, with rating of 7.7, 7.7 and 7.3 points out of a total of 10; Microsoft, Philips and Nintendo fill out the bottom of the list with scores of 4.7, 4.3 and 0.3, respectively. The leaders were lauded for beefing up takeback programs and committing to reduce or eliminate the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFR) in the manufacturing process.

Nokia, which has held the top spot in four of the seven editions of the report, missed out on first place because of inconsistency in its global takeback program.

But the report clearly indicates that OEMs are making progress: six of the 18 companies on the list scored 7.3 or higher, and 14 companies scored over the half-way mark. The scores have climbed so much that Greenpeace said it will be raising the bar for the next issue of the report, due out in June 2008. The new report will include more stringent criteria for the chemicals and e-waste categories and will include, for the first time, scores based on the energy efficiency of a company's products.

Full rankings of all 18 companies surveyed in the report, as well as detailed analyses of each company's scores, are available from Greenpeace.org.
