SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Working off the success of EPEAT's green computing standards, the U.S. EPA is helping to create environmental criteria for green copy machines and other imaging devices.

This week the EPA held a roundtable with manufacturers, suppliers, purchasers, public interest groups and electronics design experts to decide on possible criteria for the new standards and what products they should cover.

The EPA previously supported the creation of EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) in 2006, and the program is now run by the Green Electronics Council.

EPEAT ranks desktops, laptops and monitors on a number of environmental factors, including reduced use of toxins, energy efficiency, ability to be recycled, ability to be upgraded and use of sustainable packaging. There are currently about 490 EPEAT-registered products.

The standards for green copiers are expected to be unveiled in 12-18 months. Although the EPA is not developing the new standards, it is providing financing and staff support.
