PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Hewlett-Packard recycled almost 250 million pounds of products throughout the world last year, a 50 percent increase over the amount recycled in 2006.

HP also collected 65 million pounds of hardware to be refurbished, resold or donated.

The computing company plans to collect 2 billion pounds of products for recycling or reuse by the end of 2010. HP reached its previous goal of collecting 1 billion pounds of items in 2007.

Of the 248 million pounds of hardware and print cartridges recycled in 2007, the most came from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, where HP collected 170 million pounds of equipment, double the amount from the previous year. Sixty-five million pounds of products were recycled in the Americas, and 13 million pounds in the Asia Pacific region.

HP also recently announced the creation of an inkjet cartridge recycling process that allows the company to turn old cartridges into new ones. HP has so far manufactured 200 million cartridges with recycled cartridges or other plastics.
